Matthew Brain - legal director of Legix

Matthew qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and has over 20 years` experience of advising business clients of all sizes, in both the private and public sector, on all aspects of employment law and has a wide experience of representing employers at Employment Tribunals.

After working for 13 years with (what is now) Beachcroft solicitors LLP, Matthew left to join Irwin Mitchell solicitors LLP in 2002, and was made partner in June 2003.

Matthew headed up Irwin Mitchell`s Leeds employment law team and, more latterly, was also responsible for the Yorkshire team as a whole, before deciding to leave in January 2012 to form Legix, a specialist provider of employment law advice, representation and training services to employers.

The following are examples of Matthew`s expertise;

  • Drafting of contracts of employment and service agreements;
  • Formulating bespoke HR policies and procedures;
  • Negotiating and drafting compromise agreements and severance packages;
  • Advising on disciplinary and dismissal processes;
  • Developing HR strategies, in particular redundancy and restructuring programmes;
  • Representing employers at Employment Tribunals

Matthew also has particular expertise in the field of discrimination law, as well as the application of the TUPE 2006 Regulations to business acquisitions and outsourcing. He also has substantial experience in presenting seminars to clients and providing bespoke in-house training for senior employees and in-house HR teams.

Susan Clarkson

Susan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, and Branch Secretary of the West Yorkshire CIPD. She is also an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Susan specialises in advising corporate clients on the full range of HR issues and in particular prides herself on the ability to translate employment law challenges into down to earth and practical advice for her clients.

Susan is the Managing Director MD of Apollo Consulting (HR) which she established in January 2004, prior to which Susan held a number of senior corporate HR positions.

Susan has specific expertise and experience in advising clients in the following areas;

  • Dealing with disciplinary and grievance issues
  • Dealing with redundancy and reorganisation situations, including changing terms and conditions
  • Managing long and short term absence
  • Managing poor performance
  • Maternity, paternity and other family friendly rights
  • Design of tailored policies and procedures including Employee Handbooks

  • Design of recruitment and induction programmes
  • Design and implementation of performance management programs
  • Training and development strategy and planning
  • Recruitment and selection training
  • HR audits (including policy and procedure audits)

  • Investors in People implementation and advice

In her spare time, Susan is striving to learn Spanish and is a part-time taxi driver for her teenage son. As a very active volunteer within the West Yorkshire Branch of the CIPD, she gets involved in a range of local activities including organising events for the region, liaising with CIPD HQ and mentoring local members from a HR career perspective. She is also a keen cinema goer and provides HR advice on a voluntary basis to a local Primary School (where she was until recently a Governor).
